Building’s history.
14 April 1868 – Laying the foundations for a new two-storey building and church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene the Myrrophore and intended for an orphanage for 60 orphaned children from the poorest families of Sevastopol, Simferopol and other towns devastated by the Crimean War (1853-1856). The orphanage was established even earlier by Countess Amalia Adlerberg in 1855, and bore her name since April 1859.
15 April 1869 – Consecration and opening of the orphanage building and the Church of St. Mary Magdalene the Myrrophore. In 1860s-1880s, the orphanage accepted orphaned boys and girls younger than 16 from all over the Taurida Governorate.
1887 – The orphanage was transformed into an institution for girls.
1910 – 1917 – The Countess Adlerberg Orphanage was headed by Arseniy Markevych (1955-1945), an outstanding scholar of Crimea, one of the founders of the Taurida University, Central Archives of Crimea, Сhairman of the Taurida Scholarly Archival Commission, and a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
1918 – The Orphanage was subordinated to the district local authority (uyezdzemstvo) and then closed.
1918-1921 – The building housed the rectorate (presidentship), administration, offices, and departments of the Taurida (Crimean) University. In the period of 10 October 1920 through 11 January 1921, the university was headed by Volodymyr Vernadsky, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1863-1945).
1923-1927 – The building accommodated an orphanage.
1927-1988 – The building was home to the Taurida Central Museum.
1979 – The buildings of the former girls’ orphanage was granted the status of architectural and urban monument.
1993 – present – The Crimean Ethnographic Museum is located in the building.
