The ancient Greek settlement with a barbarous name of Tyritace was located on the shore of the ancient sea bay.The first dwellings on the site appeared in the second quarter of the VI century BC. They looked like houses dug-out in the ground. Soon the houses built on the ground, constructed of adobe bricks on the stone pedestals appeared.
Inside the settlement the excavations detected some streets paved with the crocks and residential buildings made of the rubble or rough cut stone. In the living-rooms local people constructed open fireplaces and ovens. The roof tile was mainly produced locally.
In the III century BC the settlement was surrounded by powerful defensive walls. They erected the towers at the corners of the plateau. The entrance to the settlement was in the north-western part.
Fishing and winemaking played a significant role in the economic life of Tyritace.
In the II century AD Tyritace was partially destructed. In the VI century, during the ruling of Justinian I a basilica was built in the coastal part of the settlement. Fall of Tyritace refers to VII-VIII centuries in the times of Turkic people raid.
