Nympheum was founded at the beginning of the VI century BC. They believe that it appeared on the site of a pre-existing Scythian village. Already in the VI century BC the city had an acropolis. Active development of the city was conducted in the VI – V centuries BC, in the second half of the IV century BC it was surrounded by a fortified wall. From the first half of VI century BC to the III century BC there was the sanctuary of Demeter outside the city. In the first centuries AD large reconstructing work was conducted in the Nympheum. It is evidenced by the remains of excavated buildings dated back to the II-III centuries BC oriented to the sides of the world. The fertility of the surrounding land and the presence of the convenient harbor served as a good basis for the welfare of its residents and provided a position of an important trading center to Nympheum.
In the first half of the IV century BC Nympheum joined the Bosporus Kingdom. At that time, the major wine-producing complexes, designed for commercial production of wine were built.
At the end of the III century AD Nympheum had been destroyed by the invasion of the Goths, and after that the life of the city was never restored in the same volume.
