The settlement of Myrmecium was founded in VI century BC and by the end of the century it became a closely built up small town. In the IV century BC Myrmecium got prosperity and was completely encircled by the wall with defensive towers. In the heyday of Myrmecium there were several temples, one of which was dedicated to Demeter. In its ruins the archaeologists found a treasure of 99 electrum coins of Cyzicus, hidden in a bronze jug.
In the I century BC Myrmecium was destroyed during the violent events that followed the death of the famous Mithridates VI Eupator.
Life in the settlement revived only in the I century BC, but by that time Myrmecium had become a village, consisting of several heavily fortified mansions. In Roman times Myrmecium experienced the periods of short heyday, the catastrophic destruction and the long neglect. Finally, life in the village stopped approximately in the turn of the III – IV centuries AD.
