Melek-Chesmensky Burial Mound is a unique burial construction dated back to the IV century BC.
The Mound’s Dromos is 9 m, it has a ledged shape and is connected to the ledged overlapping of the burial chamber. The burial chamber, almost of a square shape is 3.7 meters. The cell walls are built of clean hewn blocks. They consistently are put forward on each side, some sort of hanging one over the other. The center is shut by one plate. The construction is based on the principle of dry masonry, without mortar.
Among the many explored Bosporus ledged crypts Melek-Chesmensky went down into a history as the most perfect one technically and artistically.
The enormity of the mound construction, the perfection of the burial chamber show that the buried person belonged to the top of the Bosporus society, and quite possibly, to the royal family.
The present reconstruction of the mound was held in 1994.
