Kerch Fortress is the unique cultural heritage of the second half of the XIX century. It is a monument of fortification, better known in foreign historiography as “Fort Totleben” – named after E.I.Totleben, an outstanding Russian fortifier.
Kerch Fortress, having been built from 1857 to 1877 is a complex of fortifications, typical for the period of the smoothbore artillery fortresses.
The fortress covers a significant landscaped plot in the territory of the city of approximately 250ga with elements of the military architecture of the XIX century. The overall layout of the fortress is of a great interest as well as the moat surrounding the fortress from land with well-preserved stonework, caponiers, casemated barracks, cellars for ammunition storage, tunnel gates, footways, countermine galleries, technological facilities.
They are a model of excellence of the XIX century builders, an example of military architecture of a bygone era.
