The museum is located on the territory of the largest in the city of Kerch underground limestone mining, launched in the XIX century; it is a historical monument. The underground exhibition dedicated to the heroic defense of the city of Kerch in May 1942 was opened in 1967.
In May 1982 a memorial on the project of sculptors B.E.Klimushko, E.E.Gorban’ and an architect S.N.Mirgorodsky was opened.
The war history of Kerch is inextricably linked with the Adzhimushkay quarries. In November and December 1941, they were a home base of a guerrilla group named after Lenin.
In May 1942, after the fierce fighting, the troops of Krymfront left the Kerch Peninsula. For 170 days and nights the legendary Adzhimushkay had been fighting, being completely surrounded by the enemy!
At present the total area of the underground museum is 1.1 hectares, the length of the tour route is 440 meters, the duration of the tour is 1 hour.
Now the Adzhimushkay Museum is the most visited of all museums of the Kerch Reserve, it is the only one in Ukraine listed in the international catalogue of “World Military Museums.”
The annual military-search expeditions reconstruct the authentic course of the quarries defense and the heroism of the underground garrisons.
